YOUTH ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL EXPO
Friday, April 25, 10-12, SUNY Canton Campus Center

This year the SUNY Canton gym was busy with over 200 students in grades 4-12 who entered 80 energy and environmental projects. Prizes were offered in each of three age categories: grades 4-6, grades 7-9, grades 10-12. While the judges did their work, the younger students played a quiz game called “Watt’s Up?” and the older students heard well-known peak oil educator Richard Heinberg. Plan to enter your energy or environmental project as a class, group or individual next year, or just come to see what others have done and enjoy the mini-energy fair.

This year 1,800 people came to Upstate New York’s largest community energy education event! For the first time we had a two-day Energy Fair on both Saturday and Sunday, with four Sunday afternoon Green Home Tours and six longer hands-on workshops. Fairgoers chose from over 50 workshops and visited 60 exhibitors–everything from solar, wind, biofuels, energy conservation and geothermal to green building, peak oil, climate change, local agriculture, grass pelleting and much more. Begin to make the change to more sustainable and local living. Planning is already underway with many new ideas being developed for 2009. If you believe that affordable, applicable and accessible energy education for all is important, we invite you to join our Energy Fair community for next year. Volunteer for a few hours at the Fair or serve on the committee that plans the Fair. Want to be an exhibitor or workshop leader? Please contact Patricia Greene at fair@ncenergy.org or call 315-379-9466. For more info, go to the Energy Fair website at www.ncenergy.org

May Energy Hints

chart
  1. Ease your gas pains. Slow down. Drive at the posted 55 mph speed limits or less and enjoy the spring scenery. If you drive at 65 instead, you increase fuel consumption by about 20 percent. Drive less. Combine trips. Get panniers and basket and ride your bicycle.
  2. Want to save thousands of dollars a year and tons of CO2? Sit down with the others in your household and look seriously at whether you can give up your second vehicle, and/or downsize to a more fuel efficient vehicle.
  3. About 70 percent of the vehicles on the road have at least one tire that is over or under inflated. This can increase fuel consumption by many gallons a year, so measure your tire pressure once a month.

At COMMUNITY ENERGY SERVICES (CES) we are working to make energy renewable, reliable, efficient, affordable and environmentally friendly.

Solar PanelsCES helps Northern New Yorkers save energy, save money and save the environment through a variety of technical, informational and educational programs. These include upstate New York’s largest energy events the NORTH COUNTRY SUSTAINABLE ENERGY FAIR and the YOUTH ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL EXPO SCIENCE FAIR.

Whether it’s your home, business, church or apartment building, we offer low-cost energy audits, information about contractors and about energy efficiency grants and loans from the state. We also do site analyses for solar photovoltaics and offer workshops and classes throughout the year on everything from bioenergy and peak oil to energy saving tips.
